Surgeon's Day Research Symposium

Surgeons’ Day Description

Surgeons’ Day is an annual event of the University of Calgary, Department of Surgery, which was established in 1983 by Dr. Peter Cruse, Professor and then Head of the Department. The goal of Surgeons’ Day is to provide the residents and fellows of the department a forum to present and discuss their research activities with the research community of the Faculty of Medicine. The Scientific Program of Surgeons’ Day includes a Poster Session for fellows, a Podium Session for residents and an opportunity for the best medical student surgical research projects to be presented.

Surgeons’ Day Awards

John Smith & Laura May Gardner Memorial Endowment Award (formerly the Ruth Rannie Award): In 1989, Dr. Watanabe, then Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, instituted the award, a $1000 prize for the best overall resident research. In 2000, we decided to give two awards, one for the best basic science project and one for the best clinical project.

Peter Cruse Award: In 1996, the Dr. Peter Cruse Award was established to honor the outstanding contributions of Dr. Cruse to medical education. The Cruse Award is given to a medical student with the best surgery-related research project.

Visiting Judge/Keynote Speakers

Each year two distinguished scholar-surgeons are invited to judge and choose the best overall resident project for the John Smith & Laura May Gardner Memorial Endowment Award (formerly the Ruth Rannie Award). In addition, the visiting Judge/Keynote Speakers give a lecture (the McMurtry and the McPhedran Lectures) to share their valuable expertise and experience with the Calgary audience.
