COLD LAKE — Lakeland residents now have increased access to the diagnosis and treatment of breast, obstetric and abdominal/gynecologic imaging with the recent recruitment of the Lakeland district’s second radiologist.
Dr. Nitin Singh began providing services in Cold Lake, St. Paul and Bonnyville residents last month. He travels from Calgary to the three communities every week.
“I am pleased to welcome Dr. Nitin Singh to the Lakeland district,” says Genia Leskiw, MLA for Bonnyville-Cold Lake. “Dr. Singh’s commitment to share his expertise with these communities will surely improve the health of Lakeland residents. His recruitment is one example of how local residents, community partners, organizations and government are attracting additional physicians to Cold Lake and other northern Albertan communities.”
Recruiting health care providers to provide the right mix of health professionals in the province is among the goals outlined in the 5-Year Health Action Plan, jointly developed by the Government of Alberta and AHS, and supported by the province’s stable, five-year funding.
Dr. Singh works closely with Dr. Chander Gupta, the area’s other radiologist, who played a significant role in Dr. Singh’s arrival.
“Dr. Singh is certainly a welcome addition to our health care community,” says Dr. Gupta. “Having Dr. Singh in the community will greatly support radiology services in the area and his expertise in the field of breast and women’s imaging will benefit many patients in the years to come.”
Dr. Singh is originally from Goa, India, where he received his medical education. He taught at a hospital in India for about 18 months before he and his family moved to the Bahamas, where he practised for eight years.
From there, the family moved to Toronto, where Dr. Singh completed his fellowship (sub-specialty) in breast and women’s imaging. He completed his Canadian physician graduate assessment in Fort McMurray.
“Part of the reason why I wanted to move to Alberta was because I heard such great things about this part of the world,” says Dr. Singh. He and his wife, Branda, have two children: a nine-year-old son, Raunka, and a three-year-old daughter, Sanjna.
Alberta Health Services is the provincial health authority responsible for planning and delivering health supports and services for more than 3.7 million adults and children living in Alberta. Its mission is to provide a patient-focused, quality health system that is accessible and sustainable for all Albertans.
