I have type 2 diabetes and I have difficulty managing my high blood sugar. What can I do?
October 31, 2009
Hyperglycemia, or high blood sugar, is a term used when there is too much sugar in your blood. When you have diabetes, it is very important to monitor your blood sugar levels in order to prevent other health complications associated with diabetes. In a type 1 diabetic, hyperglycemia occurs when they do not give themselves enough insulin. In the type 2 diabetic, hyperglycemia happens when the body can not use the insulin that it produces properly.
High blood sugar can be caused by several factors:
- not enough exercise
- too much food
- stress of illness, cold or flu
- forgetting or not taking your medication
- consuming food and drinks high in sugar
- some medications not related to your diabetes medication
Some people may not display signs and symptoms until their blood sugar is too high. It is important to monitor and write down the date, time, and blood sugar level to keep track of any patterns. It may also be helpful to keep track of your food intake and activity level. By keeping a record, you will be able to gain a better understanding of what might be causing your blood sugars to be high.
Signs and symptoms to be aware of include:
- irritability or mood changes
- hunger
- tiredness
- muscle cramps
- headaches
- confusion
- numbness and tingling of the hands and feet
- blurred vision
- extreme or increased thirst
- frequent urination
Consult your healthcare provider on how often you should be testing your blood sugar and what range they would like your blood sugar to be at. Hyperglycemia needs to be managed as soon as detected.
